Homemade Pop Tarts

I have to credit this receipt to Meg from WhatsUpMoms.  I must admit I am a big fan of these lovely ladies!

Here is the video that inspired me to make my own!

I have always wanted to make my own pop tarts. Lets face it, store bought pop tarts are filled with sugar and various other ingredients that are not very good for you. At least you can control what goes into a homemade version, and then if you add bad things you know exactly who is to blame!

So I am going to show you how I made mine!

First start with a piecrust. It can be homemade or store bought. I normally make mine and I use the Pioneer Woman’s Recipe because to me, it is one of the best.

(To view other great recipes from the Pioneer Woman click here.)

I forgot to take a photo of the rolled out crust because I was too excited to get started – Sorry everyone 😦

Now you can cut out your shapes. Now normally pop tarts are square, but that can be boring. In Megs video she is making them for Valentines Day so they are hearts…me I like elephants, so that’s what I made!

I love elephants!
I love elephants!

Make sure that you cut out two for each pop tart, one for the bottom and one for the top. I only made three pop tarts out of my pie crust, but that was all I needed.

Next lay out your bottom layer on your baking sheet and then take some water and rub it around the edges.

Then you can put your filling in. I went with raspberry jam, since that is my husbands favorite!

Once they are filled (make sure that you don’t overfill.)

Now that you have them all filled and looking yummy,  it is time to top them!

Once you got them topped off, press around the filling to get as much air out as possible. Then it’s time to seal up your pie crust so that you don’t have any filling spilling over.

Don’t they look so cute?

Once they are all sealed, make an egg wash (beaten egg with a tablespoon of water) and cover the pop tarts. Now for my favorite part, top with sugar for some sweetness.

Place the tarts in the oven at 375 degrees for about 20 minutes or until golden brown. IMG_2083

Now, when I made these the first time the filling came out a bit, but they were still amazing!

I hope you all enjoy these as much as I did!

-1 Pie Crust
-Raspberry Jam ( I used a none sweetened version)
-1 egg
-1 Tablespoon water
-1 Teaspoon sugar
